Beginning Songwriting: Muse, Memory, Imagination

Words, riding timelessly on a melody, speaking directly to us… how does this happen, over and over again? Songs have a very mysterious and gentle power to encircle us, entertain us, move us, and simply enrich our experience of being alive. Communicating love, desire, tradition, protest, betrayal, courage, anger, hope—  and all the shades in between— songs are deeply woven into our human story.

I invite you to join the conversation and imagine writing one! Songwriting is slowing down to navigate the landscape of muse and memory and imagination. Songwriting is loving the shape of ordinary phrases as they leave our mouth. Songwriting is humming in the kitchen until the melody feels particularly sweet. Songwriting is play, and practice, and craft — and it is an art that is accessible and rewarding to anyone who has some reserve of patience or capacity for attention!

To begin, please bring the following tools - your infinitely unique perspective on life, a willingness to sit with a puzzle that only you can reveal, and an openness to others as we encourage and champion each other. Instruments are welcome but not required, and a background in music is helpful but not needed.
