VOICE TECHNIQUE FOR MUSICIANS with Melody Walker

A workshop for musicians who want to up their vocal game for sustainable volume, range, and flexible control that can cut in acoustic settings. Find your healthy holler or your bluegrass belt and learn how to drive it for miles with great fuel economy.

The voice is an instrument just like any other, but many professional musicians who both sing and play have dedicated countless hours (and dollars) in practice and lessons to their external instruments and hardly any to their internal vocal instrument. The goal of training on any instrument is an effortless flow of communication. Combine that with the core emotionality of the human voice and you have a powerful tool to move people. This class will focus on the foundational nuts and bolts of modern vocal technique that are most relevant to roots music vocalists and singer-songwriters.

Through group exercises, information on anatomy and vocal health, and mini lesson demos in front of the class (on a volunteer basis), students will make new sounds and unlock pathways in their voice they never thought possible before. This class will be non-sequential, with a little of everything in each class, to work for folks who may have to miss a class due to touring. Drop-ins welcome, but committing to the 4-class session is highly recommended, as we will cover different things in each.

Come prepared with one song (at least a verse and chorus) that you can sing a cappella. No music theory or instrumental ability needed, just the willingness to sing and try new (sometimes ridiculous) things.
